Question from: County Councillor Gareth Ratcliffe Subject:: Guidance for schools for September to support pupils from ethnic groups
Question:
Can the Portfolio Holder for Education provide the guidance for schools around covid19 ethnic groups and any budget implications they have identified to support pupils. This will add support following the reopening of schools in September to ensure all pupils in Powys are supported to the best of the Councils ability, as well as ensuring that educational need is met for all and does not put any pupil with an ethnic background at a disadvantage.
Minutes: Response by the Portfolio Holder:
The MEAGRT grant which is used to support the education of BAME groups of pupils, will be used to fund a specialist teacher and family liaison officer to support schools, pupils and their families. Our 3 year analysis of outcomes indicates that most ME and many GRT pupils generally perform equally as other pupils across all phases.
For information, when schools re-opened on 29th June 2020, over the four weeks, the attendance of our ethnic groups in schools has been good averaging 68.8%.
We’ve identified a lead officer for this work – Hayley Smith. She is putting an action plan in place to address the following: · Training · Systems · Leads in each school · Better use of grant funding · Data collection systems
