Question From: County Councillor Elwyn Vaughan Subject: Fire control at waste facility
Question:
In view of the large fire at the Potters recycling depot in Welshpool and the number of fires recently at similar facilities throughout these islands, would it not be appropriate and a good idea to have a water sprinkler system within the new Abermule waste facility in order to minimise fire risk in what is obviously a high risk sector.
Minutes: Response by Head of Service:
Thank you for your question, and totally agree in terms of ensuring we have the most effective means of dealing with fires. We are currently working closely with Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to develop the Fire Prevention and Management Plan (FPMP), which is a significant element of the environmental permit to operate any waste and recycling facility. The FPMP has been submitted as part of the current application for the North Powys Bulking Facility and it will be up to NRW (in consultation with the Fire Service) to determine whether it is sufficient for the operations at the site. We are still awaiting their feedback, but any actions to improve the FPMP will be carried out. |
