Question from: County Councillor Gareth E Jones Subject: Follow up question re School Catchment Areas
Question:
Areas of the County from which Pupils are Transported to Schools which are not the closest School to their homes.
Thank you for the response to my previous question in respect to the number of pupils being transported to a catchment school which is not the closest School to their home address, and I fully understand that at the start of the School year, officers are required to ensure that all entitled pupils are transported to their respective schools in a efficient manner.
I note from your response that the authority takes into account both “the culture of the area” and “the geographical topography of the area” when deciding which Schools catchment area the child’s / young persons home is within.
Can you please provide me with a list of the geographical areas of the County where either or both these factors are taken into consideration.
Minutes: Response by the Cabinet Member:
Thank you for your question.
Please accept my apologies for the length of time responding to you Councillor Gareth.
All current catchments for transport and school admissions purposes are based on nearest school. Only in very unique situations are geographical and cultural factors considered. They include:
1. The current choice for learners at Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd to either attend Ysgol Bro Caereinion or Llanidloes High School for Welsh medium provision as both schools offer Welsh medium provision. 2. The current choice for learners living in Bwlch to attend Llangynidr CP School or Llangorse CiW School.
