Question from: County Councillor Elwyn Vaughan Subject: Landfill
Question:
I note that that Telford and Wrekin Council Councillors have refused permission for the extension to Granville Landfill site, Redhill, which Potters use. Cllrs stated they were opposed to refuse from Powys coming to the site.
In view of this development what effect will this have on Powys?
Minutes: Response by the Cabinet Member:
Thank you for your question regarding the refusal of permission to extend Granville Landfill Site. Whilst this may affect private operators from Powys, there will be no impact on the Council.
Since November 2021, all residual waste collected by Powys County Council is processed through Energy from Waste plants. Residual waste would only be landfilled under exceptional circumstances and it is up to the contractor to source capacity for this material. Whilst we are striving to minimise the amount of residual waste produced by our residents, Energy from Waste is a better option than landfill, as along with the energy benefits, there is also the additional recycling to be gained from removing the metals and the recovery of the Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) which is used in the construction industry.
