Question from: County Councillor Graham Breeze Subject: Welshpool Day Care Centre
Question:
The Cabinet Member will be aware that the Day Care facility in Welshpool was handed over to Welshpool Town Council as an asset transfer on the understanding that day care facilities would continue.
The Town Council took on the centre to ensure the service continued when Powys County Council was reviewing the service and discussing closures. The day care centre has now been closed at the Ann Holloway Centre for two years with no alternative offered by the Town Council. The Town Council blames running costs.
Would the Cabinet Member for a Caring Powys give my residents an assurance that: 1. Welshpool will be part of the review promised for currently closed day care centres in Powys. 2. All avenues will be explored by Powys County Council to ensure this facility is re-opened for the people of Welshpool.
Minutes: Response by the Cabinet Member:
Thank you for your enquiry about the provision of day services for elderly citizens in Welshpool.
I can confirm that the needs of Welshpool’s elderly citizens and the provision of services to meet those needs will be part of the review of currently closed day care centres in Powys. We are committed to understanding what meaningful opportunities look like for older people in Powys, including Welshpool. We are in ongoing discussion and exploration currently about how to meet the needs of elderly people, for social connection and enjoyable and/or meaningful activity as well as for care, throughout Powys. Meeting with citizens and hearing their ideas is part of that process, and while we have no immediate plans to take over the running of new day centres in Powys, we will work, with citizens and with other Council services, to look at meaningful day opportunities and the role of the Council in facilitating these.
We will be happy to work alongside town councils, including Welshpool, to listen to their ideas and gain from their insights into the needs of their localities. If Welshpool Town Councillors would like to meet with us, please ask them to contact Dylan Owen, Head of Commissioning, directly. Please assure them, however, that we will in any case contact them in due course as we explore provision for Welshpool as part of our wider review.
I am also happy to meet with you, as the elected Councillor of the elderly Welshpool citizens affected by the closure of the day centre, to hear your views and gain from your own insight and local knowledge. If you would like to meet with me, do let me know. |
