Question from: County Councillor Elwyn Vaughan Subject: Free school meals
Question:
One of the benefits of the agreement between Plaid Cymru and Labour Welsh Government is the provision of Free School Meals at primary schools to ensure parity and fairness for all especially at these challenging times for many families.
Can we have an assurance that all the primary schools in Powys are able to provide this extended provision from September.
Minutes: Response by the Cabinet Member:
Powys County Council is rolling out universal primary free school meals in line with the Welsh Government timeline.
As indicated in the press release by Jeremy Miles, the Minister for Education and the Welsh Language, (https://gov.wales/universal-free-school-meals-roll-out-commence-september) “most children in Reception class will start receiving universal primary free school meals from this September”. In Powys it is the case that all children in Reception classes will receive a free meal as of September 2022.
The press release further states that “by April 2023, the majority of children in Years 1 and 2 will also start receiving free school meals”. This will be the case for all children in Years 1 and 2 in Powys.
