Question from: County Councillor Iain McIntosh Subject: Cradoc Primary School mobile classrooms
Question:
During the full council meeting held on 22nd July 2022, Cabinet presented cost implications associated with item 15, the motion to try and save Cradoc Primary School. Agenda item - Notice of Motion - School Closures Cyngor Sir Powys County Council (moderngov.co.uk)
Part 2 of the cost implications state “at Cradoc CP School there are currently 3 mobile classrooms that will be reaching the end of their useful life in the next 2-3 years.”. The report goes on to say, “A new condition survey of the entire school would be advisable prior to this, to ascertain the best way forward.”
If Cradoc CP School is closed, and pupils are relocated to a new school in Brecon, this is unlikely to happen for at least 4 years, probably longer. As the 3 mobile classrooms are reaching the end of their life in the next 2 to 3 years, it is clear new classroom blocks will be required before the eventual closure of Cradoc School.
Can the Cabinet member for Education therefore carry out a condition survey of Cradoc CP School, as soon as possible, and give a date of construction for the new 3 mobile classrooms, which will be required no longer than 3 years from the date of 22nd July, 2022?
Additionally, Cabinet indicated “essential works needed within the next two years totalling £135,200” at the school. Can the Cabinet member please disclose when these essential works will be carried out, and that the education of any pupils at Cradoc CP School will not suffer due to the requirement for this work to be carried out?
Minutes: Response by the Cabinet Member:
Thank you for your question and apologies for the delay in responding.
I can confirm that a condition survey of Cradoc CP School, including the mobile classrooms will be undertaken as soon as it is possible to make the arrangements. The results of the condition survey will then inform future decisions around essential works that need to be undertaken and the serviceable life of the mobile classrooms.
The essential works (estimated total of £135,200) that are scheduled for the next 2 years are: • 2022-23: Fire alarms & emergency lighting in main classroom & mobiles • 2023-24 (provisionally): Replacement of the vinyl flooring in the main hall and refurbishment of toilets and cloakrooms. This is provisional dependant on ranking of these projects against other schools’ priorities in the Schools Major Improvements programme.
I can confirm that the education of the pupils at Cradoc CP school will not suffer due to any essential works that may need to be carried out to maintain a safe and operational school environment until the new primary school in Brecon becomes operational.
