Question from: County Councillor Elwyn Vaughan Subject: Dolau School
Question:
I notice the report to Cabinet suggesting a 12 month period to look at the potential of establishing the school at Dolau as a Welsh medium facility. As the Chair of the Welsh Education Strategic Partnership (WESP), representing a partnership of experienced and acknowledged organisations in this field, can you please clarify-
• What is the intended process in measuring the demand? • What will be the measure of long term sustainability? • How do you envisage securing a team of fully bilingual staff? • What is the lowest number of pupils acceptable to open a Welsh medium school? • Where will they access the follow on Welsh medium secondary education?
Minutes: Response by the Portfolio Holder:
Following the confirmation of the Cabinet decision, the Transformation Team will be developing the formal approach to this review over the summer, and will be focusing on assessing the demand in the wider area for Welsh-medium primary provision. If this review concludes that this is a viable option, and that there is demand for a school that may grow over time, then the team will explore staffing options. In terms of secondary Welsh-medium provision, currently the nearest provision is at Ysgol Calon Cymru in Builth Wells.
