Question from: County Councillor John Morris Subject: Llanbedr Church in Wales Primary School

Question From:

County Councillor John Morris

Subject:

Llanbedr Church in Wales Primary School

Question To:

County Councillor Phyl Davies

Portfolio Holder for Education and Property

Question:

Following the Cabinet meeting on 9th November 2021 where the proposed closure of Llanbedr Church in Wales Primary School was discussed an official PCC press release was sent out in which you are quoted as saying.

“If this school is to close, then the learners would be attending schools that would be better equipped to meet the requirements of the new national curriculum and that could provide a wider range of educational and extra-curricular opportunities.”

Can you tell me which specific schools you were referring to in this area and what evidence you have to substantiate your comments?

Response by the Portfolio Holder:

Nobody in a role within the council is saying that “small schools cannot deliver the new curriculum” or even implying that.  What is being said is that it will be more challenging for a teacher who teaches 3- or 4-year groups at a time to deliver the change that is needed therefore larger schools are better equipped in terms of human resource.  We are yet to meet a professional who would not concur with this view – and our trades unions are concerned about the workload in schools with teaching heads and multiple year groups in each class.  It is far more challenging for our smallest schools to engage, compared with those schools that have an individual member of staff responsible for a single area of learning and experience for the whole school, rather than a single teacher leading on all six AoLEs for an entire key stage (as schools are currently configured).
