Question from: County Councillor Matthew Dorrance Subject: Access to Covid testing programme for Powys students in Merthyr College
Question:
Many Powys citizens access Further Education and Higher Education at Merthyr College.
These learners are able to access the mass testing programme which is now operational within the Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council area.
Can this Council advise what discussions it is having with Merthyr Tydfil CBC and Merthyr College to ensure Powys residents who attend the college know how to access the testing programme.
Minutes: Response by the Portfolio Holder:
Thank you for highlighting the matter and we have written to Merthyr College.
We have received the following response: I am writing in response to your letter regarding Powys students attending the college and their eligibility to participate in the Merthyr Tydfil mass testing programme. I am pleased to confirm that under the remit of the mass testing scheme anyone living, working or studying in Merthyr Tydfil is entitled to a test. All of our students [including those residing in the Powys area] have therefore subsequently been invited and encouraged to undertake a test as part of our college mass testing schedule with all students being provided with a designated time and day to attend Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre accompanied by their tutors and members of the College management team. To further encourage students from the Powys area to have a test, we have also offered to put on an additional bus service from the area for them to come down and have the test and then then be taken straight back to Brecon, if they do not have lessons at college on that particular day.
I do hope that this reassures you that students from your area have been very much part of our plans for the mass testing and have had every opportunity to take part.
