Question:

 

With the Chief Vets from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland having taken a joint decision to raise the level of risk of bird flu arriving in Wales from 'low to medium'; and bearing in mind the importance of the poultry sector now to our agricultural sector in Powys; what steps and plans are being put in place to ensure that such a threat doesn't have a detrimental effect on our farming sector and communities as happened when we had foot and mouth.

Response by the Portfolio Holder:

 

The Council and the Welsh Government have Animal Health Disease Contingency Plans in place for dealing with an outbreak of avian influenza.  The Council’s Plan integrates with the Welsh Governments plan which can be found at: Welsh Government plan

 

In addition to the above, a press release has been issued advising poultry keepers of the situation, providing signposting to essential guidance and asking them to ensure that their biosecurity measures are maintained or strengthened, as required.
