Question from: County Councillor Liz Rijnenberg Subject: Free parking spaces
Question:
PCC has removed free parking spaces from our towns to protect against the spread of disease. The latest message from PCC indicates that only 50% of displaced parking will be provided in town car parks. The rationale given for only 50% being replaced is in order to promote ‘Street Scene’/green agenda.
This decision goes against the commitment from PCC to help kick start local businesses and in effect sets up a trade-off between these two agendas which is unhelpful at this particular point in time.
Please provide the evidence which informed this decision being made at a time when local businesses are looking to PCC to supply the displaced spaces one for one. Minutes: Response by the Portfolio Holder:
Thank you for your question sent on 6 July 2020.
Measures to safeguard pedestrians using the available “on street parking” provision have / are being installed across the county. As you suggest this has not been received well by businesses as they see it as a reduction in available on street parking and a detrimental effect on their ability to trade.
A paper will be taken to Cabinet tomorrow [21 July 2020] with proposals to review free parking in the county and the effect on businesses and I will be able to update you further following that meeting.
