Question from: County Councillor Elwyn Vaughan Subject: Abermule Waste Recycling site
Question:
In view of the huge fires in recent days and weeks at waste management recycling sites at Lampeter and at Wrexham, causing huge disruption, and the fact that the proposed new facility at Abermule is located between the main railway line and major trunk route, will Powys council review the fire control at the site.
Will it also confirm if it will have insurance cover for fire risks and in view of the proximity of the River Severn, and the huge amount of polluted water that would be involved with such a fire, please confirm how pollution of the water courses will be avoided.
Minutes: Response by the Portfolio Holder:
Fire detection and control measures will be in accordance with current regulations and guidance. As part of the Building Regulations application, recommendations have been received from the Fire Service and these are incorporated into the design of the building. The Welsh Government and Network Rail who have responsibility for the A483 Trunk Road and the Cambrian Rail Line respectively have been consulted and have raised no concerns about fire risks at the facility and the operation of the A483 and rail line.
Appropriate insurance cover will be in place for the site and buildings upon it. Measures have been incorporated within the drainage systems to prevent water leaving the site and entering watercourses in the event of a fire.
For information, the commercial waste management facilities in Wrexham and Lampeter are many times larger in terms of capacity than the facility currently under construction at Abermule.
