Question from: County Councillor Matthew Dorrance Subject: Council Response to Covid 19 Free School Meals
Question: As the Council works with key partners and agencies in response to COVID-19, what arrangements is it making to:
1: ensure learners who access Free School Meals can still get a hot nutritional meal each day if schools in Powys close?
Minutes: Response by the Portfolio Holder:
Last week we provided packed lunches at local schools for FSM pupils, which parents had to collect. Like other local authorities who did the same the uptake of these packed lunches was very low. With the majority of our schools closed from Thursday 26th March, we had been contacting supermarkets to set up voucher schemes for parents, however have only managed to set up Tesco’s vouchers which isn’t suitable for everyone in Powys.
We are waiting for advice about a National voucher scheme from Welsh Government, in the mean-time all Free School Meal entitled pupils will receive a bank payment into parent/carers accounts via our Income & Awards team. This will be allocated until the end of term. Parents/carers will be contacted, and an online form will be available to complete where individual details are required.
