Question from: County Councillor Kathryn Silk Subject: Use of Lamp Posts as Charging Points for Electric Vehicles

Question From:

County Councillor Kathryn Silk

Subject:

Use of Lamp Posts as Charging Points for Electric Vehicles

Question To:

County Councillor Heulwen Hulme

Portfolio Holder for Environment

Question:

Further to the Cabinet Member’s answer to my question about the use of lamp posts as charging points for electric vehicles, what difference is there between lamp posts in Powys and lamp posts in London such that it is not “feasible or safe” to install charge points on Powys lamp posts whereas over 1,000 lamp posts in London have been so enabled?

Response by the Portfolio Holder:

The electricity supply to the council’s street lighting is only sufficient to power the relatively low powered lanterns on the lighting columns which have a maximum loading of 2kw.  To allow for EV chargers which require 7 - 22kw for relatively a low powered charger would require an upgrade to the supply and this is not feasible at this time.  In London they will have greater access to a much better network to allow connections which can meet the needs of the column mounted EV chargers.
