Question from: County Councillor Matthew Dorrance Subject: Provision of Salt Bins
Question: In its much celebrated Vision 2025 document, the Cabinet claims it will support our residents and communities. However recent requests for grit salt bins at various locations in St John Ward, which would help residents and my community, have been declined by the Council.
This is despite the Council saying:
“We will be an open and enterprising council, this means: · Working with communities, residents and businesses · Willing to look at new ways of working and delivering services · Focussing on solutions rather than problems” Will the Cabinet explain how its refusal to provide grit salt bins in St John Ward fits with its own Vision to look at new ways of working and delivering services and focussing on solutions rather than problems?
Minutes: Response by the Portfolio Holder:
In reply to your question made on the 30th December 2019 regarding grit bins in St John Ward, Brecon, please find my response below.
Having consulted the service area on the issue raised, I am aware that there has been previous requests to provide salt/grit bins in St John’s Ward. The two locations identified as requiring salt/grit bins are not actually adopted roads maintained at public expense, and therefore it is not appropriate to make provision here.
There has also been a request for a salt/grit bin to be provided at the junction of Cradoc Road and the Promenade Lane. Cradoc Road is included on a primary gritting route and as such is treated as a priority every time there are ice conditions forecast; which negates the need for a bin at this location.
The garage area in St John is again not part of the maintained highway network, but this is an area maintained by Powys via the Housing Department, and with this in mind the Highways Area Manager is liaising with Housing colleagues.
