Question from: County Councillor Elwyn Vaughan Subject: Uned Cyfeirio Disgyblion / Pupil Referral Unit
Question:
In view of recent comments by Cllr Glyn Preston to members of the public in Newtown that the PRU centre will close and that the centre at Brecon will be kept. Can you please confirm the situation and ensure that the matter has not been predetermined and correct Cllr Preston's comments.
Furthermore can you please confirm rumours that the post of Interim Head of Newtown PRU unit from Sept 24 is to be advertised at a likely cost of circa 60 - 70k? Bearing in mind the approved budget highlighting a potential saving of 600k in relation to the PRU facilities, can you please clarify how is this going to be achieved bearing in mind the inconsistency in messaging in relation to this matter.
Minutes: Response by the Cabinet Member:
Whilst it is not our policy to respond formally to unsubstantiated comments made by non Cabinet members I welcome the opportunity to update members on progress in respect of PRU provision.
A comprehensive business case is being completed and therefore no decision has been made as to what the future of the PRU provision in Powys will look like – a number of options remain under consideration – and these will be scrutinised through the relevant pathways in the council before being submitted to cabinet for a decision to be made.
An advert has been sent to all headteachers to forward to appropriate staff with information about a secondment opportunity for the Newtown PRU from September 2024. This allows us to provide stable and flexible leadership at the site and provides a development opportunity for a member of staff while options are finalised. The salary for the post was not published as it is a secondment position and therefore would be dependent on the secondees current salary.
